Here are five ways that you can send a message to your elected officials at various levels about what you think transportation policy should be in Los Angeles and the United States. While no one of these contacts is likely to have a large impact, ongoing silence only serves to support the status quo. Take the time to tell politicians what you think is important. Remember that a written letter, call, or fax is given more weight than an email comment. If anyone knows other good initiatives out there, post them in the comments.
Hello folks, we plan on taking a few weeks off to work on the shop. Our last night of operation this year will be Tuesday 12/23 and we will reopen to the public on Tuesday 1/6/2009. During that time we will reorganize the shop and keep Dingo and Syd company. Here’s wishing everyone an excellent end-of -year-celebration-type-thing-greeting-holiday-type-whatchamacallit-thingamybob-
type- seasonal time event.

The Bike Oven was well represented on the radio this week. We were featured in several segments on Kill Radio’s Bike Talk program on Saturday Dec. 13th. Josef was in the studio for an an interview about the Oven, cycling advocacy, and Flying Pigeon LA.
Bike Talk rolling reporter Steven Bowers was kind enough to come out to the Oven as well to do an on-site interview during our sidewalk sale to discuss our mission, needs, and events.
Bike Talk is a weekly program focusing on cycling, broadcast on KillRadio.org, Saturdays 10am - noon. You can listen live at KillRadio.org and past shows are available for download here or at KPFK.org. We were featured on show#5. Josef’s interview begins at the 23:30 mark and the interview at the Oven starts at 36:40.
Separately, we were interviewed by Kill Radio’s latest addition, Freewheel. This free form cycling discussion does not appear to be available for download yet. But new shows can be heard Saturdays, noon - 2pm.
Saturday Dec. 13, 8:00 - 11:00 am

In our effort to out do ourselves and cause severe heart attacks we are adding a doughnut making workshop but wait it’s healthy, say what, you heard me healthy doughnuts I’m trying it out. I’ll make the dough and when you get here at 4-6pm December 13 before the ride you’ll get to fry and dunk in glaze . Lemon Pistachio Doughnuts. It’s a workshop so call in and sign up just so I know.
ART SHOW DROP OFF FRIDAY DEC 12 3-7pm
Hey you know everyone is so broke for xmas that our show is minimally ghetto, submit pictures of bikes you’ve lit up or take some lights and put them on a bike you dont ride and hang that shit up, it’s our cheap tree but it’s a bike. yes I’m making no sense but bring art even if you dont think it’s art we all have to look at something saturday night and I feel curating is above us. C’mon let’s build an art bike community bike co-op like the legendary bikas. If you dont know what that is look it up, it will inspire you, drop off is Friday If anything I’m daring all those burning man people that dont believe in making art in the city for the city.
SPOKEN ART RIDE
yes it’s still going on. Meet at the flagpole at York and Figueroa at 6:30pm leave at 7pm. Don’t think Joseph doesn’t love you, he makes a different route everytime you get the best art in Highland park and I think the city. Kick out the good artist from downtown and where do they go, yup Highland Park. It does have theme “light up my Bike” so light it up any way you can.
AFTER PARTY AT OVEN AT 10pm ish
Okay so we’ll have doughnuts and something hot coffee or hot coco. It’s on, Kiddie bike races. Burning Pinatas and this time it’s going to be a child size pinata(like 12 year old) Bike toss was a success and whatever else you think of that we can get away with(downhill kidie bikes, please) just dont hurt Tomatoes. No real tomatoes were hurt at the last bike toss.
Wednesday December 10, 7:00pm - 10:00pm
The Bike Oven presents the class, “Overview of Tool Use”. A comprehensive overview of the general purpose, common bicycle-specific, and advanced special purpose & thread forming tools used for bicycle repair and maintanance.
The class will consist of a lecture (approx 45 min) decribing tools, their proper usage, sources and home-made tools. Next will be a brief demonstration of various tools in action. Finally, students will get a chance to handle tools and practice using them on shop bicycles which will be dissassembled only, no repair work to be done at this time.
Future classes will include the application of these tools to specific areas of bicycle maintenance and repair. This class will be an excellent introduction for those new to bike repair, those less familiar with the unique tool set needed for bike repair, and those who want to improve their knowledge of proper tool usage, maintanance, and design.
Class is limited to 8 students. RSVP by emailing us at info@bikeoven.com
A suggested donation of $10 is requested. $5 donation for active volunteers.
