Monday and Wednesday nights at the Bike Oven are Bike Oven Tech Training (B.O.T.T.) nights. We teach each other bike repair and destruction, we take care of our shop, and work on our own bikes. We relax our normal shop rules, order a couple of pizzas, and generally have a “Good Time” ™.
This week, we’re going to focus on training people on the proper use (and abuse) of chain tools. Last week, Harv held a class on chains and chain tools – and this week we’ll be going over that stuff, and doing a bunch of other work on bikes in the shop – breaking them down, and hopefully building a few back up.
The shop is open from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m, but we’ll be closed to the public. Bike Oven volunteers only. If you’re interested in becoming a “volunteer” at the Bike Oven, email at us at info@bikeoven.com or just stop in to hang out and lend a hand.
More info about volunteer at the Bike Oven can be found on our Volunteer page.
The Bike Oven parade posse is rolling again this Saturday, May 3, 2008 – come join us!
This Saturday, May 3, 2008 at around 11:00 a.m. bike riders (and ridazz) are invited to join the Bike Oven in the Cypress Park Cinco De Mayo Parade. If you’d like to join us, bring your bike, a smile and a good waing arm – as you’ll be showing off your trusty bicycle to the rest of the neighborhood.
We’ll have some oranges and water on hand – you’ll probably need some sunscreen (and maybe a tall boy or two for after the parade).
Any aspring contenders for the Ms./Mr. Bike Oven 2008 position should arrive appropriately dressed – we’ll have an innertube sash made up for you and a royal rickshaw you will be ridden around in (we’re accepting applications for rickshaw wallahs also). Bike Oven t-shirts and shop aprons can now be purchased through Zazzle.com. Their prices are a bit high, but a (small) portion of each sale goes back to the Bike Oven. Styles, colors, sizes, and even text can be customized.
The Bike Oven’s initial reaction to news that we are going to be recognized for helping the environment, “We better recycle this can.”
Our local councilman, Ed Reyes (1st District), is going to give the Bike Oven a bit of special recognition this coming Friday, April 18, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at an Environmental Awards Breakfast in the Tom Bradley Tower downtown.
If you’re interested in being there on the Bike Oven’s behalf, shoot me an email at ubrayj02 @ yahoo.com
If anyone has any idea about what sort of background information we should offer up, post it here, or email it to me. I’ll work on something to submit on Wednesday, April 15, 2008 – but I can use all the help I can get on this one! The big question: should we mention how cheap wine and Mexican cookies helped fuel the Bike Oven in its early days?
If inspiration strikes here is what the staff putting the award ceremony together need:
“… background information on the history of Bike Oven, when it was established, your service to the community, and any other pertinent or interesting info on Bike Oven, etc.?”
Dr. Hawking will explain that black holes aren’t as black as they are painted. Things can get out of a black hole to the outside and, possibly, on to another universe.
Nothing has been set in stone for this meeting as of the time of this writing – but if there is anything you’d like to talk about, throw in a comment below.
If you’re interested in getting more involved with the Bike Oven, apply to see what we’re doing in our forum .

The Spoke(n) Art bicycle ride is a free, once-a-month, bicycle tour of art galleries in North East Los Angeles.
The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month – a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart’s “Gallery Night”.
This month’s Spoke(n) Art Ride will feature “MÁSCARA”, an exhibition of work by artist Laura Hackney. The exhibition opens on Saturday, April 12, 2008 and will remain at the Bike Oven until May 3, 2008. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 7 pm. For further information about the MÁSCARA exhibition, please contact Laura Hackney at laurahackney AT mac.com
If you are riding your bike, pushing your shopping cart full of bottles and cans, taking the bus, driving your hummer, whatever, stop by the Bike Oven at 3706 N. Figueroa Street between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2008 for free hot chocolate and pan dulce.
It’s “Bike to Work Week”, but bike commuters know that these silly annual events are all about skipping work to get some free schwag and bike tune-ups.
The Bike Oven is going to open its doors early on Thursday, May 15, 2008 to anyone who wants to come and celebrate bikes with a cup of free warm liquid, some unhealthy pastries, and a bunch of ne’er do wells on two wheels.
Unlike the official “Bike to Work Day” events being put on by the MTA, our Bike to (not) Work Day event will feature numerous unemployed layabouts, students, and (hopefully) a few housewives.
This month, a big group of us went through a bunch of stuff: kiddie bike give-aways, our legal status (as a collective), what to do for a huge art show in June, etc.
