The Bike Repair Teaching Techniques class will take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Bike Oven, located at 3706 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065. To sign up for the class, email ubrayj02@yahoo.com or call 310-902-5439. Class size is limited, and priority will be given to Bike Oven volunteers (all are welcome, however).
The purpose of this class is to show people some useful techniques for sharing knowledge about bike repair with other human beings. This may seem silly, but sometimes the best mechanics can be the worst teachers. It is often the case that a skilled mechanic spends a lot of time perfecting their craft, and very little learning how to share and spread it. The Bike Oven, and other bike repair co-ops and collectives, is based in part on the sharing of knowledge about bike repair. Therefore, being a good bike mechanic is not enough to keep the Oven cooking! Our volunteer mechanics must also know how best to share what they know - and that is what this class is all about.
The whole thing should run about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Afterward we’ll get to bike repair and tearing down in the shop (if anyone is interested in working on that).
“Bike Repair Teaching Techniques”
