Wednesday January 28, 7:00pm – 10:00pm

The Bike Oven presents the class, “Bicycle Rim Brakes”.

A comprehensive overview of traditional rim brakes for road & mountain bikes. Class will cover caliper, cantilever, and v-brake style braking systems. Future classes will review disk brakes separately. History, design, maintanance, adjustment, and repair will be covered.

The class will consist of a lecture (approx 20 min) describing bicycle brake history, development, design, and operation of the various types of rim brakes. Next will be a short demonstration of the removal, inspection, service, repair, installation and adjustments to a road caliper type of rim brake. Finally, students will get a chance to remove, disassemble, inspect, repair, service and reinstall their own rim brakes.

Students should bring their own bikes to work on. Some shop bikes will be available.

Class is limited to 8 students. RSVP by emailing us at info@bikeoven.com

Note: As of Wednesday morning, we still have some openings for the class. So, just show up tonight and participate.

Our next tutorial will focus on gears, derailleurs, chains, shifting, and the drive train. We will cover the basics of adjusting shifting on multi-speed bicycles with friction and index shifting. Installation, alignment, and inspection of derailleurs and shifters will be reviewed. We will also cover basic inspection of the drive train including chain and chainring wear and chain replacement. There are no prerequisites for this session and no prior mechanic experience is required.

Please bring your bike or project to work on if you wish. But shop bikes will be available for the class.

Class is limited to 8 students. RSVP by emailing us at:
david.matsu at gmail dot com

A suggested donation of $10 is requested. $5 donation for active volunteers.

(Note: the shop will be closed for this class. No other shop use while in session.)

The Oven’s tutorials are designed to help new and current volunteers get up to speed on various common repair tasks we see in the shop so that they can participate in the madness we call the BikeOven…priority will be given to those who want to become full fledged volunteers. But we can fill open spaces with anyone who is simply interested in gaining new skills.

Upcoming classes include Brakes tentatively scheduled for January 28th and Wheel Truing for February 11th.

UPDATE: Class is full. Watch for future classes or visit us during normal hours for help and training.
