Keira Dooley’s “Bike Rodeo” is one of several cycling related pieces at the Oven this month.

The Spoke(n) Art bicycle ride is a free, once-a-month, bicycle tour of art galleries in North East Los Angeles. This month’s Spoke(n) Art Ride will feature “Here, There and Everywhere”, a group art exhibition curated by Julie Zemel.

The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month - a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart’s “Gallery Night”.

This month’s Spoke(n) Art Ride will feature “Here, There and Everywhere”, a group art exhibition curated by Julie Zemel. The exhibition opens on February 9, 2008 and will remain at the Bike Oven until March 6, 2008. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 9, at 7 pm. For further information about the Here, There and Everywhere exhibition, please contact Julie Zemel at zemeljulie@yahoo.com

The Ride:

The Spoke(n) Art Ride will begin (as it usually does), at the flagpole on the corner of Figueroa and York Blvd. in Highland Park. We will leave at 6:30 p.m. for a mellow ride to about 7 or 8 different galleries open for NELA Art’s Second Saturday.

No cover charges, no waivers, just bring a functioning bike (and some blinky lights).

The ride will end at the Bike Oven & Sandpaper Books at 3706 N. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90065 - where an art opening will be in full swing.

The show, like bicycle culture itself, creates powerful momentary connections between artists whose paths may not have crossed any other way, from LA based artist Lisa Anne Auerbach’s fleet of red unicycles, originally part of her Unicycle Rental Shop at High Desert Test Sites, to Chicago’s Mike Una who creates funky outer-space disco beats by riding a bicycle, from Davis and Davis’ Instructions for Female Subjects (Sexercycle) where one should: Step1. Mount bike and slip your feet into the pedals . . . Step 3. While standing on the pedals and leaning over the handlebars, slowly dip your breasts fully into the water-filled beakers . . . Step 10. Stop pedaling (before reaching orgasm); to Brooklyn’s own Taliah Lempert who will paint a custom commemorative portrait of your favorite bicycle for a reasonable fee.

The exhibition opens on February 9, 2008 and will remain at the Bike Oven until March 6, 2008. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 9, at 7 pm.
