Bike Oven Gives Up On PLACE Grant

I had mentioned earlier that the LACBC was working with the Bike Oven and the Los Angeles Department of City Planning to send in a proposal to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to be awarded a “PLACE” grant.

Well, I slacked on the proposal writing, and the due date (Tuesday, November 13, 2007) didn’t leave me much time to work on the proposal.

So, that’s it. We gave up. No more grant writing, no money, nothing.

I am so depressed.

Cheer up bunkie. There will be other grants, other applications, other things to take up time and effort. Meanwhile, we go back to our prime directive. Fix bikes and party. Burritos Especiales at La Abeja, tripping over junque bikes on the shop floor, welcoming chicas con bicicletas coming into the shop for the first time, giving demo rides on the rickshaw, etc. ‘Tis not all bad. :-)

Get over it. Suck it up, quit your whining and just get ‘er done next time. You have no one to blame but yourself and if you spent more time working and less time sulking you would have completed the proposal!

    Kick your own ass!

    Alright? Go forward and prosper.

Yo, SJ, come out of hiding…. who the f%#K are you? Be a man and post up homes… if your gonna level criticism, do it up front and then throw down some volunteer time. Yo Ubray, you have a lot on your plate, you’ve done good shit in the past and your energy is what who/where we are today…. That ain’t bad, we have a good core of folks and more stepping up. When one of us falters, one of us will step up, well in your case it may have to be 2 of us… but there those of us who will be there with you and do what we can. It may not happen as we dreamed, but it will happen, kind’a like how your kids grow up, maybe not what you hoped for, but maybe even more beautiful than you could imagine. Half of it is the journey anyway… oh god, someone stop me before I hurl….

Ah man, y’all are too kind. After feeling like a total loser for a few days, I’m over it. What a relief to have all of that stuff off of my mind. Maybe if I had a job in the public sector, or grant writing, I’d have been able to pull off this proposal. Nine-to-fiving it and trying to do everything else I do was just plain stupid. I am pretty happy that I can get back to working with everyone at the Oven, and everyone in the L.A. bike scene, doing what matters most - fixing bikes and throwing parties.

Oh yeah, SJ, thanks for the appraisal of my work ethic. Also, bite me.

I gotta say, that grant would have been totally a tough one to win. And then it wouldn’t be the right project, then it would be managed by penny-pinching accountants at the LA County Department of Health Services. I think we made the right choice. We actually dodged a bullet.

What we need is a great forgiving funding source.

And I’m confident we will work together again. I sure hope so, at least.

LACBC totally hearts the bike oven.
