Bike in Movie is Back at the Bike Oven This Sunday at 9pm. Ride your bike over

The BIKE IN MOVIE NIGHT IS BACK FOR THE SUMMER. AND WE’RE DOING TRASHY SUMMER DRIVE INS. First up, we’re going to be fast forwarding through The Car 1977, a demonic car movie far worse that Christine and a bicyclist worse nightmare. We’ll fast forward through the slow seventies long dialogue and get you the real guts of the movie.

Then after that we are going back to classic Kung Fu, with SISTER STREETFIGHTER, starring Sonny Chiba and an actress that looks suspiciously like one of our regular bikers, ANNIE.. You see Annie on rides giving a few martial art moves. Just erase the streetfighter thoughts that come to your head, videogames kids cartoons. this is NOTHING like that,. This movie KICKS KUNG FU ASS, and it may have inspired Bruce Lee’s KUNG FU movie career.

Movie Night at the Oven: TRON !

January 20, 2008
7:00 pmto10:00 pm

“Tron”,¬†Made by Disney in 1982,¬† stars Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges and follows the story of a guy who enters into a computer program to….well, nevermind. No one’s ever watched Tron for the plot. It’s the look of Tron that really kicks ass.

Shot monochromatically in the computer world this movie is a marvel to look at. Plus everyone’s got their own Tron story….where they saw it, the time they dressed up as Tron for halloween, etc. And if you’ve never seen Tron, you’re gonna be friggin amazed. The lightcycle races alone are worth the prize of admission.

Speaking of which….as always, this is a fund raiser for The Bike Oven. Four bucks gets you in. Tron dogs, beverage and a special Tron cocktail, created by Pruitt just for the occasion are also available for next to nothing. Come in a glowy Tron costume and we’ll all laugh at you but be secretly envious!

eat!sleep?bikes! Screening Follow-Up

The screening of eat!sleep?bikes! was a great night at the Oven. We were able to raise some money for the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition and we got to watch an awesome short film, drink good beer, eat free soy ice cream, drink fresh brewed coffee, and generally mix it up with a group of fellow cyclists and cycling ethusiasts.

We got some coverage in the L.A. Blogosphere, when one of L.A.’s transportation bloggers wrote about the eat!sleep?bikes! screening on his blog, Street Heat.

I took a few photos and put some of them together into a Flickr photo set (click on the photos to read captions):

Bike-In Theater: Plot Twists and Tecates

November 2007 Bike-In Theater screening of “Aventurera”

A packed house took in the cabaretera classic “Aventurera” with a side of Tecate and Mexicali Hot Dogs .

With art from the last opening still up on the walls, a tool rack full of half broken bike tools, and spare tires hanging from hooks to the rear, a dedicated crew of cyclists set up a screen and projector at the Bike Oven this past Sunday evening - and my what a show they put on.

This month’s event was primarily organized by Wonder Dave (of the amazing Eagle Rock based duo Crespin and Wonder Dave), with large assists from Crespin, Black Lady Sidekick, and the projector slangin’ mediterranean we all love, Marino. Ratt_Bones of the Bike Oven spent part of his evening hooking up a screen that can be set up and put away quickly - and it really helped make the film more visible to more of the room.

You can read about the film, “Aventurera” and the screening by visiting either the Bike-In Theater event post for “Aventurera” or the Midnight Ridazz event post.

On top of all the movie watching going on, the Bike Oven was open (from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) for open shop time, and we had a pretty steady flow of traffic in the door. We’ll be open on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evening this week for shop hours from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

I am always amazed with how quickly this place turns into so many different things. I hope that next month’s Bike-In Theater keeps bringing more folks into the fold, and keeps on building bicycle culture.

A big thanks to everyone involved in tonights screening, and thank you to all who came!

Bike-In Theater - Aventurera

November 18, 2007
6:30 pmto11:00 pm

Aventurera Screen Grab

Cabaret or … whorehouse? If only poor Elena had known the difference!

Bike-In Theater at the Bike Oven this month will feature a rarely seen classic Mexican Melodrama “Aventurera” (Adventuress). The film is in En Espanol with English subtitles.

This 1950 black-and-white outrageous masterpiece is a film that would make Pedro Almodovar proud. Young, virginal, Elena seeks revenge from those who forced her to transform from goody two-shoes into an immoral slut by tricking her into working at a cabaret/bordello. This movie has thrilling twists and turns, high drama, as much sex as you can pack into a 1950 film with musical cabaret numbers that have to be seen to be believed.

You can find more information in this Bright Lights Film Journal article on “Aventurera”.

$3 donation requested at the door.

Also available: Mexicali Dogs, Cheap Coronas, and Sangria.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m., the film starts at 7:30 p.m.

If you’d like to discuss this with others, check out the Midnight Ridazz forum post for this month’s film.

The Bike Oven is located at 3706 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065.

The Bicycle Oven Presents

Bike-In Movie Night…Halloween Style

Sunday, October 21st, Doors Open at 7pm.

September’s movie night at the oven was so successful that we’re making it a monthly event.

Veronica and WonderDave will be hosting

and planning these events.

For October we’ll be screening…..What features Herve Villechaize as a horny King, a topless
princess, a dancing frog, and Danny Elfman as Satan?

Yes, we’re screening the 1980 bizarro cult classic….THE FORBIDDEN ZONE

Directed by Richard Elfman and with wonderfully odd musical numbers by Danny Elfman, this movie was an offshoot project from the group, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. It’s a black and white fantasy about The Hercules Family who discover their basement hides a secret doorway to the Sixth Dimension, a demented world of tortured souls ruled by King Fausto, Queen Doris ( Susan Tyrrell), and their topless daughter, The Princess . Their kingdom is guarded by jockstrap-clad boxers The Kipper Kids) and a half-man/half-frog named BustRod. Anymore would be giving away the weirdness that is…The Forbidden Zone.

Also….

Vintage Horror Film Trailers

Hot Dogs and Cold Beer for sale!

Free Halloween Dessert!

“The Sixth Dimension” cocktails, especially designed by Pruitt-The Cocktail Master

These movie nights are fundraisers for The Bike Oven. $3.00 donation requested.

The Bike Oven is located at: 3706 N. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90065
