Spoke(n)Art Ride - PinataCon 2008

Burnination at a Spoke(n)Art Afterparty

The Spoke(n)Art bicycle ride is a free, once-a-month, bicycle tour of art galleries in North East Los Angeles. This month’s Spoke(n) Art Ride will feature burnination, pinatas, and fun. It will be a hearkening back to simpler times - medieval times. Times when pinatas were the mark of a true party, and their burnination was the highlight of the night.

The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month - a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart’s “Gallery Night”.

Bike Oven Tech Training

Bike Oven Tech Training

Wednesday nights at the Bike Oven are now Bike Oven Tech Training (B.O.T.T.) nights. We’ll be training each other in bike repair and destruction, taking care of our shop, and working on our own bikes. We relax our normal shop rules, order a couple of pizzas, and generally have a “Good Time” ™.

This is a chance for our volunteers to work on their own bikes in the shop. We also work on random bikes in the shop - tearing them down, building them up, and organizing them.

This week, we’re going to focus on getting a few road bikes we’ve had in the shop for a while read to ride. We’re also going to try and clean out the loft area in the back of the shop (this promises to be interesting).

The shop is open from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m, but we’ll be closed to the public. Bike Oven volunteers only. If you’re interested in becoming a “volunteer” at the Bike Oven, shoot an email at us at info@bikeoven.com or just stop in to hang out and lend a hand.

Community Meeting to Deal With Aftermath of Gun Battles

February 26, 2008
7:00 pm

In light of the recent gun battle(s) that broke out in the Cypress Park/Glassel Park neighborhoods of North East L.A., local leaders are inviting the public to come together during some regularly scheduled Neighborhood Council meetings to discuss what has happened with local law enforcement officials.

The first meeting we’ve heard about is being coordinated with the office of Councilmember Ed Reyes. Councilmember Reyes is encouraging all concerned residents to attend the Greater Cypress Park Neighborhood Council, Health and Safety Committee Meeting this Tuesday February 26, 2008 at 7:00 pm.

The meeting will be held at:
Aragon Avenue Elementary School Auditorium
1118 Aragon Avenue
Los Angeles CA 90065

Councilmember Reyes will be accompanied by: Deputy Chief Diaz, and Captain Perez of the Los Angeles Police Department.

For more information, contact the councilman’s office at (213) 485-7063.

We’ve Got Press! Oxy’s Gottlieb Covers the Oven

Well I’ll be - that ivory tower isn’t so far away after all! Occidental College’s Robert Gottlieb has included the Oven in an article adapted from his book “Reinventing Los Angeles: Nature and Community in the Global City” (MIT Press).

The book excerpt is available in the March/April 2008 issue of Sierra Magazine (the Sierra Club’s bi-monthly publication) in an article entitled “Bikeway or the Highway” by Richard Nelson.

Way down at the bottom of the page, the Oven gets some online ink:

“The Bike Oven … started as a free repair and do-it-yourself bicycle maintenance shop, but the garage where it operates has now become a social space and meeting center where neighborhood rides are launched, monthly art shows are held, and “bike-in” movies are screened. And while policymakers still largely ignore the bike’s potential as one alternative to the car, L.A. cyclists have begun to coalesce into a force that promises to become more formidable in the months and years to come, as the congestion, pollution, and cost of driving become the movement’s most effective recruiting tool.

Surprisingly, this print description has captured the Oven, and L.A.’s social cycling scene, pretty well! Thanks for the mention Dr. Gottlieb, Richard Nelson, and Sierra Club. You’re welcome to ride down the hill from Occidental College anytime and join us in the fun. Tomorrow night our Bike-In Theater will be screening “Vampiros lesbos” after our normal Sunday shop hours are over. It’ll be fun for the whole family (as long as they’re all over 18).

Vampiros Lesbos

OMG. Oh yes, we will go there. This Sunday, February 24 2008 at 8 p.m. lesbian vampires will take to the screen at the Bike Oven in Highland Park for yet another Bike-In Theater screening. This month’s feature? Vampiros Lesbos!

20″ Bicycle Giveaway

The Bicycle Kitchen recently had a huge bunch of children’s bikes donated to them. Since they are not in the business of handing out free kids bikes, they tapped a bunch of local bicycle collectives and advocacy groups to see if we could hook up some needy youngsters in our neighborhoods.

The Bike Oven received a stack of around 15 bikes, and we’re working out the details of a giveaway to some deserving organization, or group of kids, in our area. The bikes even came with helmets - which is awesome, because kids are not allowed to ride bikes in California without a helmet.

Councilman Reyes’ office might be able to help us out with some fun schwag, or just a little it of press. The folks at C.I.C.L.E. have a few bicycles from this shipment as well - and plans are in the works to coordinate some sort of training class for the kids that get these bikes. I want to hook these new ridazz up with some blinky lights.

If you’ve got a good idea, or a good cause, throw up a link in the comment section or shoot us an email at info at bikeoven.com.
