This coming Wednesday, April 2, 2008 we’re going to close the shop for an evening and have a meeting to discuss a bunch of stuff having to do with bikes and the Bike Oven.
We’ll probably try and figure out what sort of parts (and how much money for parts) we’ll spend this month. We’re definitely going to talk about making the shop better, and what we should focus on this next month. Plus, any events, rides, or whatever scheduled to happen will also get brought up.
The meeting is going to start at 7 p.m. We’ll have some pizza there too. Yay, pizza!

On Saturday March 22nd, Bike Oven will be hosting a fundraiser put on by 2008 AIDS Life Cycle riders Team Midnight Ridazz. From 1pm to 4pm, Midnight Ridazz team members will be there to bathe your dirty bikes. Come on out to have a great time, get your bike cleaned and support the team as they prepare to make the long trek from San Francisco to Los Angeles for AIDS Life Cycle. Bring some friends and bring your bike!
This benefit is also happening (simultaneously!) at Bikerowave in West Los Angeles.

At the upcoming Cycles of Continuance/Sustainable Transportation Using Bicycles and Public Transit with Rick Risemberg of Bicycle Fixation you can learn how easy it is to get around your city on your own power or with the help of public transit–even if your city is one as vast and busy as Los Angeles! We’ll cover equipment, clothing, techniques, and attitudes that make all-weather bicycling not only practical but pleasurable. Free yourself from obesity, stress, high fuel prices, and boredom, and free the planet from sprawl and pollution and the gigantic tax subsidies given to road abusers. And no, you won’t need to dress in Lycra!

Bring your multi-speed bike to the Bike Oven and convert it to a Single Speed, or do a double-conversion - mountain to Single Speed Road. Use our workshop facilites, tools, and expertise to build the bike of your dreams. Or buy one of the used bikes we have on hand for your conversion project. Shop time is a $5.00 per hour (donation) plus parts. We have new BMX freewheels, tyres, tubes, and cables. We have used wheels, handlebars, stems, and brakes.

This month we covered some hot topics at the Oven: getting bikes ready to ride (for sale) and finding a way to have more fun in the shop (like old times). Out notes are not very thorough, but they reflect the group decisions we made during the course of the meetings.

The fun never stops at the Bike Oven! We’re having a management meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 7 p.m.
We’re working on all sorts of things as a group right now: rebuilding bikes, selling rebuilt bikes, stocking our shop, hosting art shows, giving away bikes to kids, and a bunch of other stuff too.
If you’re interested in seeing how things at the Bike Oven run, you’re welcome to join us. We’re collectively run - and we try to get everyone’s assent to a decision about managing the shop. It can be slow going, but since we’re all volunteers with no clear hierarchy it’s the best way we’ve found to get things done.

The Spoke(n)Art bicycle ride is a free, once-a-month, bicycle tour of art galleries in North East Los Angeles. This month’s Spoke(n) Art Ride will feature burnination, pinatas, and fun. It will be a hearkening back to simpler times - medieval times. Times when pinatas were the mark of a true party, and their burnination was the highlight of the night.
The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month - a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart’s “Gallery Night”.
