Come take a look at what they thought the future was going to be like in the 70′s.Pretty close. 6pm thankgiving for us and 7pm movie starts. popcorn and bring thanksgiving left overs and you get a burger king crown.

Makai Bikes & Others Kick Down

Big thanks to Makai Bikes of Redondo Beach, CA and Pasadena InCycle for the donated small parts to the Bike Oven this past few months!

They’re going onto build-a-bikes every day we’re open, and everyone appreciates your donation.

A big thanks also to all those who have recently dropped off their old bikes, old parts,  and junk (the recycling guy gets the junque – so nothin’ goes to waste!).

p.s. And thanks to Ted too!

Comments Temporarily Broken Fixed!

We’re experiencing a little weirdness with our caching plugin and our spam-prevention plugin right now that is making it impossible to comment on posts.

Sorry for the hassle! We’re working on fixing the conflict and will hopefully have it out of the way soon.

[Update 4/12/09: It looks like we've resolved it! Woohoo!]

Bike Oven Tech Training – Wheel Truing Again

March 25, 2009
7:00 pm

Hey you bumpy wheeled ridazz! Come by the Bike Oven on Wednesday night and learn the basics of wheel truing.

Wednesday Mar 25, 7:00pm – 10:00pm

This class will focus on wheel truing (straightening) and spoke adjustment. There are no prerequisites for this session and no prior mechanic experience is required. Anyone is welcome to attend. You will be given a brief overview of wheel design, construction, evaluation, tensioning, spoke replacement and tools and will then have an opportunity to practice on actual wheels.

Shop wheels will be used, but please bring your own as well for extra practice.

Class size is limited to 6 students. Secure your spot by emailing Josef at: ubrayj02 at yahoo dot com. Or call: 310-902-5439

First confirmed, first served. Walk-ins will only be admitted if class size permits.

(Note: the shop will be closed for this class. No other shop use will be allowed while in session.)

The Oven’s tutorials are designed to help new and current volunteers get up to speed on various common repair tasks we see in the shop so that they can participate in the madness we call the BikeOven…priority will be given to those who want to become full fledged volunteers. But we can fill open spaces with anyone who is simply interested in gaining new skills.

A suggested donation of $10 is requested – but if you’re broke you’re broke.

Caste no bar.

B.O.T.T. November 19, 2008 – Bike Repair Teaching Techniques

November 19, 2008
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

Bike Oven Regulars Hanging Out Behind the Front Desk

The Bike Repair Teaching Techniques class will take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Bike Oven, located at 3706 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065. To sign up for the class, email ubrayj02@yahoo.com or call 310-902-5439. Class size is limited, and priority will be given to Bike Oven volunteers (all are welcome, however).

The purpose of this class is to show people some useful techniques for sharing knowledge about bike repair with other human beings. This may seem silly, but sometimes the best mechanics can be the worst teachers. It is often the case that a skilled mechanic spends a lot of time perfecting their craft, and very little learning how to share and spread it. The Bike Oven, and other bike repair co-ops and collectives, is based in part on the sharing of knowledge about bike repair. Therefore, being a good bike mechanic is not enough to keep the Oven cooking! Our volunteer mechanics must also know how best to share what they know – and that is what this class is all about.

The whole thing should run about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Afterward we’ll get to bike repair and tearing down in the shop (if anyone is interested in working on that).

“Bike Repair Teaching Techniques”

  • Introduction to Learning Styles
  • Developing a “story” about a bike repair
  • Being prepared to be wrong
  • Demonstration
  • Practice

The Bike Repair Teaching Techniques class will take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Bike Oven, located at 3706 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065. To sign up for the class, email ubrayj02@yahoo.com or call 310-902-5439. Class size is limited, and priority will be given to Bike Oven volunteers (all are welcome, however).
