FRIDAY: Critical Mass Caravan!!

critical_mass_pre-copy2

So it’s the last week of the month again and you know what that means kiddies- Critical Mass time. This month, instead of just sneaking away from our jobs and families, here’s an official post to letcha know: We (The Bike Oven staff and Friends) are riding to CM as a pack from the Bike Oven. That’s right. Through months of careful traffic and terrain research, we’ve figured out a slick back alley route to the CM start point at Wilshire and Western. Anyone interested in joining us to ride out as a group is more than welcome to come. We meet at the Oven at 6 pm and ride out by 6:30 at a chill pace to get to CM smooth and on time. Our super duper top secret route plan does however include one brief stop at the Southwest corner of Echo Park (aka Glendale and Bellevue) for those of you not right on time or NELA enuff to start with us, we’ll scoop you up along the way.

7:00 pmto10:00 pm

threads
Wednesday July 29th, 7:00pm - 10:00pm

Threads are literally what hold your bike together. But this key mechanical element is often ignored or abused.

The Bike Oven presents a overview of the thread forms and standards on the bicycle. We will review the common thread standards, how they developed, compatibility, pitfalls, and repair. Normally considered a more advanced topic, this class is a good overview for anyone who wants to learn to work on bicycles properly. No prerequisites.

The class will consist of approximately one hour of lecture. Additional time for questions and review of tools. No repair work scheduled, but if you have a specific problem, bring your bike to be addressed in the class.

Class size limited by space. RSVP to secure a spot by emailing info@bikeoven.com

Donation requested. Active volunteers may attend at no charge.

Bike Oven Class Series - Bicycle Evaluation

July 15, 2009
7:00 pmto10:00 pm

Wednesday July 15, 7:00pm - 10:00pm

Learn to evaluate an entire bicycle to determine repairs and adjustments required to put it into optimum working order. Condition of wearing surfaces, bearings, controls, and other components will be examined non-intrusively, that is, without disassembly. Needed repairs and extent of repair will be noted on an evaluation sheet to be provided as class material.

After demonstration portion of class, students will evaluate their own (or Oven supplied) bicycle in the manner presented. Students will then complete their own evaluation sheets. No tools will be needed or used, nothing will be disassembled or repaired. All evaluation will be done by sight, sound, and feel. No prerequisites for this class. No hablamos Español. Nous ne parlons pas français. Wir sprechen nicht Deutsches.

RSVP to:  info@bikeoven.com for class reservation. Limit eight students.

(Note: the shop will be closed for this class. No other shop use will be allowed while in session.)

April’s Art Show/Spoken Art Ride April 11

April 11, 2009
6:30 pmto11:30 pm

ceci011Saturday Night spoken art ride is upon us. Meet at the flag pole at York and Figueroa at 6:30pm leave at 7pm. The usual mayhem. Last months ride was like taking a trip on the Willy Wonka boat ride, no drugs needed. The best art ride in the city.
The artist featured this month is Cecilia Marmol. We are going back to painting. She paints scenery and scene and recently was about to show at MOCA but they backed out for lack of funds but we won out because now we get to show her work before she becomes world famous. The party and reception is at 10pm when we get back from the art ride and on until 12to 1ish. Pinata and kiddie bikes and black bean enchiladas.
