Hello folks, we plan on taking a few weeks off to work on the shop. Our last night of operation this year will be Tuesday 12/23 and we will reopen to the public on Tuesday 1/6/2009. During that time we will reorganize the shop and keep Dingo and Syd company. Wednesday December 10, 7:00pm – 10:00pm
The Bike Oven presents the class, “Overview of Tool Use”. A comprehensive overview of the general purpose, common bicycle-specific, and advanced special purpose & thread forming tools used for bicycle repair and maintanance.
The class will consist of a lecture (approx 45 min) decribing tools, their proper usage, sources and home-made tools. Next will be a brief demonstration of various tools in action. Finally, students will get a chance to handle tools and practice using them on shop bicycles which will be dissassembled only, no repair work to be done at this time.
Future classes will include the application of these tools to specific areas of bicycle maintenance and repair. This class will be an excellent introduction for those new to bike repair, those less familiar with the unique tool set needed for bike repair, and those who want to improve their knowledge of proper tool usage, maintanance, and design.

A suggested donation of $10 is requested. $5 donation for active volunteers.
Wednesday October 29, 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Learn to evaluate an entire bicycle to determine repairs and adjustments required to put it into optimum working order. Condition of wearing surfaces, bearings, controls, and other components will be examined non-intrusively, that is, without disassembly. Needed repairs and extent of repair will be noted on an evaluation sheet to be provided as class material.
After demonstration portion of class, students will evaluate their own (or Oven supplied) bicycle in the manner presented. Students will then complete their own evaluation sheets. No tools will be needed or used, nothing will be disassembled or repaired. All evaluation will be done by sight, sound, and feel. No prerequisites for this class. No hablamos Español. Nous ne parlons pas français. Wir sprechen nicht Deutsches.

Wednesday October 15, 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Our second tutorial will focus on wheel truing (straightening) and spoke adjustment. There are no prerequisites for this session and no prior mechanic experience is required. Anyone is welcome to attend. You will be given a brief overview of wheel design, construction, evaluation, tensioning, spoke replacement and tools and will then have an opportunity to practice on actual wheels.
Shop wheels will be used, but please bring your own as well for extra practice.

The Oven’s tutorials are designed to help new and current volunteers get up to speed on various common repair tasks we see in the shop so that they can participate in the madness we call the BikeOven…priority will be given to those who want to become full fledged volunteers. But we can fill open spaces with anyone who is simply interested in gaining new skills.

This Wednesday will be the first in a weekly series of tutorials taught by the Bike Oven’s mechanics and covering all aspects of bicycle repair, maintenance, technology, tools, and advocacy. There are no prerequisites for this session and no prior mechanic experience is required. Anyone is welcome to attend. You will be given a brief overview of the theory, tools, and practice of hub bearing repair and will then have an opportunity to rebuild actual parts.
If you have a bike you would like to work on, please bring it along. If not, we will work on shop bikes.

I’m writing this post in July – so I don’t know what is going to be on the agenda. We’ll be getting together to discuss shop business, upcoming events, and any hare brained scheme anyone wants to throw out there (i.e. “Using bikes for transportation” – what a joke!).
The meeting takes place during our shop hours from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
We’re getting together this month (once again) to take care of some “bidness”, mix it with a little bit of pleasure (Dingo’s will be in the house), and we’re going to end early – because we have a bunch of bikes that need to be stripped down for parts and recycled before they form their own collective to do the same thing to us humans.
The meeting will take place during our normal shop hours, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
This past month, we argued like all get-out about “Art” and art shows, rent going up (inflation?), and Dingo’s feelings. It’s worth a read if you’re looking for some bed-time material.
