The Bike Oven parade posse is rolling again this Saturday, May 3, 2008 - come join us!
This Saturday, May 3, 2008 at around 11:00 a.m. bike riders (and ridazz) are invited to join the Bike Oven in the Cypress Park Cinco De Mayo Parade. If you’d like to join us, bring your bike, a smile and a good waing arm - as you’ll be showing off your trusty bicycle to the rest of the neighborhood.
We’ll have some oranges and water on hand - you’ll probably need some sunscreen (and maybe a tall boy or two for after the parade).
Any aspring contenders for the Ms./Mr. Bike Oven 2008 position should arrive appropriately dressed - we’ll have an innertube sash made up for you and a royal rickshaw you will be ridden around in (we’re accepting applications for rickshaw wallahs also).

Dr. Hawking will explain that black holes aren’t as black as they are painted. Things can get out of a black hole to the outside and, possibly, on to another universe.
This talk by Professor Hawking is intended for a general audience.

The Spoke(n) Art bicycle ride is a free, once-a-month, bicycle tour of art galleries in North East Los Angeles.
The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month - a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart’s “Gallery Night”.
This month’s Spoke(n) Art Ride will feature “MÁSCARA”, an exhibition of work by artist Laura Hackney. The exhibition opens on Saturday, April 12, 2008 and will remain at the Bike Oven until May 3, 2008. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 7 pm. If you are riding your bike, pushing your shopping cart full of bottles and cans, taking the bus, driving your hummer, whatever, stop by the Bike Oven at 3706 N. Figueroa Street between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2008 for free hot chocolate and pan dulce.
It’s “Bike to Work Week”, but bike commuters know that these silly annual events are all about skipping work to get some free schwag and bike tune-ups.
The Bike Oven is going to open its doors early on Thursday, May 15, 2008 to anyone who wants to come and celebrate bikes with a cup of free warm liquid, some unhealthy pastries, and a bunch of ne’er do wells on two wheels.
Unlike the official “Bike to Work Day” events being put on by the MTA, our Bike to (not) Work Day event will feature numerous unemployed layabouts, students, and (hopefully) a few housewives.

It will be a hearkening back to simpler times - medieval times. Times when pinatas were the mark of a true party, and their burnination was the highlight of the night.

If you want to read more about the Highland Park Holiday Parade, there is a funny write-up of the parade by El Chavo on Blogging.LA. El Chavo is the Eastside’s own smart-ass, latino, blog reporter. He was too lazy to hang out long enough to see the Bike Oven’s entry (3 1/2 hours after the start of the parade), but he captured the strange nature of these ‘hood parades in his inimitable way.

The Bike Oven has been invited to take part in the 8th Annual Nacimiento Tour, providing free bicycle repairs at the start and end point of what promises to be an amazing tour of North East and East Los Angeles.
The free, guided, 8th Annual Nacimiento Tour will take place on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 11 a.m. (guided tour registration begins at 10 a.m.). The ride begins and ends at the Los Angeles River and Gardens Center located at 570 W. Avenue 26, Los Angeles, CA 90065. You can register for the tour, or take a look at the tour map online, at www.theraretimes.com.
The tour will start at 11 a.m., and wind its way through homes and public displays of East Los Angeles’ rich folk-art nativity scenes. The tour covers the communities of Highland Park, Cypress Park, Lincoln Heights, and Boyle Heights - a total of 18 miles of bicycle riding at a relazed pace.

The Ride:

The ride takes place on the second Saturday of each month - a special night in North East Los Angeles. Area art galleries open their doors late into the night as part of NELAart’s “Gallery Night”.
The Spoke(n) Art Ride will begin (as it usually does), at the flagpole on the corner of Figueroa and York Blvd. in Highland Park.
This month’s ride is going to bring the Spoke(n) Art Ride back to its after-party roots: pinatas, kiddie bikes, bike racing, some beer, a lot of fun.
The details are being worked out, but we’re basically going to have a birthday party/parties, along with the Spoke(n) Art Ride, converge at the Oven sometime after 9:30 p.m.

The Bike Oven, on behalf of the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council, participated in the 2006 NELA Christmas Parade.
On Sunday, December 2, 2007 the North East Los Angeles Christmas Parade is going to slowly make its way down Figueroa Street in Highland Park. In 2006 a contingent of cyclists from the Bike Oven rode in the parade, handing out decorated children’s bicycles along the way.
We’ve been asked to participate in this year’s event, and after filling out a parade entry form, all we need is a group of cyclists willing to join us as we spread “Peace Around the World!” (the theme of this year’s parade).
