Wednesday January 28, 7:00pm – 10:00pm

The Bike Oven presents the class, “Bicycle Rim Brakes”.

A comprehensive overview of traditional rim brakes for road & mountain bikes. Class will cover caliper, cantilever, and v-brake style braking systems. Future classes will review disk brakes separately. History, design, maintanance, adjustment, and repair will be covered.

The class will consist of a lecture (approx 20 min) describing bicycle brake history, development, design, and operation of the various types of rim brakes. Next will be a short demonstration of the removal, inspection, service, repair, installation and adjustments to a road caliper type of rim brake. Finally, students will get a chance to remove, disassemble, inspect, repair, service and reinstall their own rim brakes.

Students should bring their own bikes to work on. Some shop bikes will be available.

The Oven’s tutorials are designed to help new and current volunteers get up to speed on various common repair tasks we see in the shop so that they can participate in the madness we call the BikeOven…priority will be given to those who want to become full fledged volunteers. But we can fill open spaces with anyone who is simply interested in gaining new skills.

Bike Oven Class Series – Bicycle Tools

toolcollage1.jpgWednesday December 10, 7:00pm – 10:00pm

The Bike Oven presents the class, “Overview of Tool Use”. A comprehensive overview of the general purpose, common bicycle-specific, and advanced special purpose & thread forming tools used for bicycle repair and maintanance.

The class will consist of a lecture (approx 45 min) decribing tools, their proper usage, sources and home-made tools. Next will be a brief demonstration of various tools in action. Finally, students will get a chance to handle tools and practice using them on shop bicycles which will be dissassembled only, no repair work to be done at this time.

Future classes will include the application of these tools to specific areas of bicycle maintenance and repair. This class will be an excellent introduction for those new to bike repair, those less familiar with the unique tool set needed for bike repair, and those who want to improve their knowledge of proper tool usage, maintanance, and design.

Class is limited to 8 students. RSVP by emailing us at info@bikeoven.com

B.O.T.T. November 19, 2008 – Bike Repair Teaching Techniques

Bike Oven Regulars Hanging Out Behind the Front Desk

The Bike Repair Teaching Techniques class will take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Bike Oven, located at 3706 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065. To sign up for the class, email ubrayj02@yahoo.com or call 310-902-5439. Class size is limited, and priority will be given to Bike Oven volunteers (all are welcome, however).

The purpose of this class is to show people some useful techniques for sharing knowledge about bike repair with other human beings. This may seem silly, but sometimes the best mechanics can be the worst teachers. It is often the case that a skilled mechanic spends a lot of time perfecting their craft, and very little learning how to share and spread it. The Bike Oven, and other bike repair co-ops and collectives, is based in part on the sharing of knowledge about bike repair. Therefore, being a good bike mechanic is not enough to keep the Oven cooking! Our volunteer mechanics must also know how best to share what they know – and that is what this class is all about.

The whole thing should run about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Afterward we’ll get to bike repair and tearing down in the shop (if anyone is interested in working on that).

“Bike Repair Teaching Techniques”

  • Introduction to Learning Styles
  • Developing a “story” about a bike repair
  • Being prepared to be wrong
  • Demonstration
  • Practice

Bike Oven Class Series – Bicycle Evaluation

Wednesday October 29, 7:00pm – 10:00pm

Learn to evaluate an entire bicycle to determine repairs and adjustments required to put it into optimum working order. Condition of wearing surfaces, bearings, controls, and other components will be examined non-intrusively, that is, without disassembly. Needed repairs and extent of repair will be noted on an evaluation sheet to be provided as class material.

After demonstration portion of class, students will evaluate their own (or Oven supplied) bicycle in the manner presented. Students will then complete their own evaluation sheets. No tools will be needed or used, nothing will be disassembled or repaired. All evaluation will be done by sight, sound, and feel. No prerequisites for this class. No hablamos Español. Nous ne parlons pas français. Wir sprechen nicht Deutsches.

Email info@bikeoven.com for class reservation. Limit eight students.

(Note: the shop will be closed for this class. No other shop use will be allowed while in session.)
