This isn't actually a personal dispute, I just don't have Martin's phone number. I have that sew up all glued and ready to go. You'll just need to get a tube of glue (buy Vittoria Mastik One!!), and I can show you how to glue it on. I should be free Monday night, and I plan on coming by the Oven. If you still want to trade that frame, let me know. My number is 323 493 0260. Give me a call or a text message. Jon R.

"... then go somewhere else"

This quote, from our last meeting (or the one before - I can't recall right now which it was) has been ringing in my ears particularly loudly the past several weeks.

I thought the meaning was clear, but I offended Harv a lot with this remark, and I think I know why.

Here is the spirit of what I wanted to say that evening:
"If you only want to help others fix their bicycles, that is a good thing. However, other people help out at the Bike Oven for different reasons, and we have included in our mission a host of activities that do not involve helping others to fix their bicycles."

This is what I was thinking at the time, but the words that came out of my mouth weren't specific enough, and presented my views as though I were hostile to the entire idea of bicycle repair at the Oven if it interfered with (in this case) exhibiting art! This realization came to me while I was riding down Main Street in Lincoln Heights by the brewery last week.

I hope that we can talk about what our mission is in this light - instead of the light I inadvertently cast with my poorly put remark.

It's not suppose to be bitch & moan, bite & scratch... leave it at the freaking door..... All of you guyz need to go chill and leave the Oven out of whatever personal issues you have between each other. This level of petty in fighting is destructive behavior and should stop.
Yesterday, Saturday May 10th, I got to the shop about noon to set up. The art show people were there, but nothing was hung on the wall. I carefully worked around their stuff, being extra polite (in view of last month's debacle), and set up the shop using only half our space. One o'clock came and went and the photo's were still on the floor. We opened and struggled along with our limited space for a couple of hours. Then it got real busy and we ran out of space, and the photo's were still on the floor. I started to move our single stands into the rest of the shop and we carried on. There were other, minor problems, but we worked around them.

Bottom line here is that we must make it crystal clear to the exhibitors that they MUST have all art work on the art wall BEFORE noon on opening day. I require the one hour just to set up the shop. This has not been possible for the last two art shows. We are getting busier every weekend and will continue to do so.

There seems to be an attitude among the exhibitors (from day one) that they own the space and we must accomodate them for their exhibit. It is my understanding that they are our guests and our operation comes first and must be accomodated by them. They seem to expect us to work around them and not the opposite. Not all exhibitors were problematic, so lets all get on the same page here.

Good news - someone decided to show how stupid we are for still using that ridiculous plastic donation jar!

Yup, all the money from the shop being open on Saturday and all the money people at the art opening gave us - it is all mostly gone. Whomever stole from us left us with a whopping $19 for the night.

I know this is to be expected when we're so lax with things - but still, WHAT THE F**K!! If I ever find out who did this to us, they are done. It feels so personal this time. I killed myself this weekend. We all are pitching in, trying to make this work, and somebody just figured, "Fuck these guys."

What can we do tonight, or this week, to keep our money secure? We need a heavy-ass box/jar, with a lock on it.

Here is my suggested procedure: only core volunteers handle the money, a night's money and work orders go into the box in an envelope that is tallied at the end of the night.

Francis came down and talked to Steve C. Today somewhere outside the Oven. Apparently they had a long conversation about the Oven this afternoon.
Steve came down later and filled us (myself and Iggy) in a bit on what they discussed.
Apparently we are not supposed to have any events at the Oven. The reason being is that through Steve, according to Francis there has been NO communication about any of the goings ons at the Oven to Hector or her. I find this hard to believe as I myself have had a conversation with Hector about events at the Oven. In fact he had even shared with me some stories about death metal and punk shows they have had at the space.

Steve reminded us throughout the conversation several times that Francis has the power to throw us out at any time. Apparently she is not pleased about how much space we occupy in the building. That we have taken over everything thus rendering the space useless to her. Also the bikes hung from the ceiling are apparently not supposed to be there. This too I have spoken directly to Hector about. That is when he informed me that we can not use the two walls to the sides.

There was plenty more that I don't remember off hand, but those were some of the strong points that stuck in my head.
Also, the Xbox.... Apparently this is still an issue and very much still on the plate. Steve hinted and suggested that we replace it for her.
During the hinting he also reminded us that she can toss us out at any time.

I got the idea (my own hypothesis) that she may have told Steve that it gets replaced or we get tossed. Steve did not say this by any means, but It seemed like this may be the situation and was suggested through many, many more words. I could be wrong, but that is what I made of the conversation. Please do not quote me on this. I brought up the idea that it is a collective and we were already discussing things like who is responsible for replacing lost items? The person responsible, or the Oven? Eddie trashed my cash box, but we know it was Eddie. Linda lost her i-pod, but we have no idea who it was. So is Eddie responsible for my cash box? Or is the Oven? Is the Oven responsible for Linda's I-pod? Or is whoever took it? Then there is the missing cash. Who do we hold responsible for that? The Oven? Or those outside of it who may have had access.

To my knowledge there were several sets of keys that were unaccounted for while these thefts took place. It could have been some one from the Oven, or it could not have. One thing remains the same. Whoever did it knew exactly what they wanted. Steve also said something about a missing PsP, and a missing digital camera too. I don't understand how this could have been a recent discovery. If you are missing a gaming system, would you not check to see if the others are still there? And if so, would you not remove them yourself?

Steve seemed very distraught as if the shit is about to hit the fan. I am confused and have a head ache from this. I thought the issue was done with a long time ago. I don't see how beating a dead horse will make things better. I think it sucks when anyone has something bad happen to them.

I have a slight issue with the Oven being held responsible. It makes me feel as if I am being held responsible as well as every volunteer. I don't like that and it doesn't sit well with me. I was under the impression that it was a collective space. Not a hierarchy. Working together to solve a problem is one thing, but being held responsible is the same as being accused. In that light we have all been accused and held responsible. The accuser should not wield power or an ultimatum in a collective. Then again maybe I'm just over thinking this. Either way I told Steve I would post something up on here about these issues. Then maybe we could discuss it and move forward.

Thanks for reading and please don't quote me on the power wielding. I have no idea if that is true. It is just speculation on my part as to what may have went down behind closed doors. I don't actually know.

Someday, there will be someone so annoying, rude, or dangerous that we will need to decide that they are not welcome at the Bike Oven unless they act in a different manner.

How should we deal with this type of situation?

Should we, as a core, get together and decide what is up? Does the person get to appeal to us as a group? What if we're not all in agreement with the decision to oust someone?

Should we even be talking about stuff like this, at a time when we haven't even made the rent for the month?!
