Saw recent photos of Harv's eBike project and thought it might be time to set up a gallery of bikes "Baked at the Oven" and other relevant photos. I'd want to limit it to bikes that underwent conversion, major rehab, other significant work at the shop. Ideally include before and after shots and brief notes of details of the work done. Pat our own backs and give our customers a chance to show off a bit.

Question is where to host it. Could set up a Flicker page and just link to it. Or add it as a full or sub-page on the site.

Thoughts?

Got bikes/photos you want to contribute?

OK to let Josef list some of his custom Pigeons and other projects even though they are for commercial sale?

Attendees: Matt F., Juan, Martin, Veronica, Stacie, Colleen, Steve C., Don , Josef, Harv,J. Harv

1) Classes will be held and run by Harv:
Wednesday 7/15 - general bike evaluation class ( beginner - no experience needed) repeat of a previous class
Wednesday 7/29 - advanced threading types,bb,pedals, headsets, etc - assumes somewhat experienced bike mechanic.......
will need help posting, updating, printing class materials ,etc - details to follow,,

2) Movie Night - none this month due to coaster bike races on Sunday nights this month sponsored by Atomic Cycles - see Veronica for details

5) Computer stuff - mailing lists, on-line calendar, contact lists , Bike Oven forum use and access. General discussion about making these more accessible.
Josef, Matt, Colleen and Stacie will work on these.

6)? Open this weekend - fourth of July? - Limited staff available due to the holiday weekend but may be a big demand because of the Holiday. Plan as of now will be to Open Saturday and close Sunday. We may try to tempt added volunteer participation by having a BBQ late afternoon ending early enough to take in any fireworks shows...
See Harv - shop manager for Saturday..

7) Key Holder status was reviewed and Agreed that Josef will discuss with individual(s) where status may be revised.

8) Volunteers working on own bikes - Veronica clarified the existing policy on Monday Night and it worked out well. Volunteering means you help out the Oven first and work on your own bike AFTER helping the Oven out in some way. The daily shift manager and others should take the lead in setting the environment: We have a "to do list" -help the Oven out and work on something on the list First - then you can work on your own bike(s) if space and time permit.
Also some Volunteers have been coming in on regular nights( other than Mondays and Wednesdays) to work on their own bikes. The policy should be enforced that on regular nights , volunteering means helping other people with their bikes (NOT your own) This also does not mean working on your friends bikes for free. Friends who are not already volunteers should sign in and pay like everyone else, OR show up and do volunteer work on Mondays and Wednesdays, then be able to work on their own bikes After.....but only on Mondays and Wednesdays
Will to implement this tonight - new shop manager on Thursdays anyway - we'll see how it goes......

Last night a client brought in a dual-suspension department store bike that he had just purchased cheaply at a garage sale. He wanted to check it out and tune it up. Turns out that it was so badly made that this was not possible. The worst problems concerned the bottom bracket (shot) and the front derailler and shifter. Also noted were bent chain rings. Most of the time spent on this bike was wasted. So here are my suggestions:

When you see a bike like this (a clients or a shop bike), strip off the front derailler and put the chain on the middle ring or advise client to this if not a shop bike. Advise client to replace twist shifters with thumb shifters. If shop bike, do this or make it a single speed. Ditto for old trigger shift bikes.

We have plenty of thumb shifters.
.

Anyone heard of or have any opinions about using teflon tape instead of grease for threaded parts like BB and pedals? Also about using anti-seize compound instead of grease since that is really what you are trying to achieve in this case and not "lubrication". Not so much an issue for the shop but for personal interest in "doing it right".

There were some questions about how to handle our email list. I've put together some basic instructions for how to manage and mail to our lists.
What we really need is someone who will consistantly maintain these however (add new people, move people between categories as their status changes, send out blasts as needed, etc.)
Matt has also suggested www.list.org and an online way to handle mailing lists as well. May be worth a look.

The mail list function is pretty simple to use. Below are some basic instructions. With a small amount of work, we could get this set up a lot better. Next meeting let's discuss what mailing lists we should maintain for what functions and then I or someone can set it up so it's easier to use. Here's a rough list of lists we should have:
- keyholders
- active volunteers
- interested in volunteering
- friends/regulars
- bike the talk
- all who've ever expressed interest
- etc.

The lists are held in the application called Address Book. There's a link on the menu bar next to the Mail icon.
When you open it, there are three columns, Group, Name, and individual cards
The "All" group is everyone in the system
The other groups are subsets of "All", so if you add someone to the "New Volunteers" list, they also get added to the "All" list automatically.
Individuals can be member of multiple lists or none as appropriate
You can create a new Group by clicking the plus sign under the Group column. Then I think you have to manually add the names you want on the list.
You can add a new name by clicking the plus sign under the Name column. If you have a sub-list selected when you click the plus sign, the new name will automatically be added to that list and the "All" list.

To send an email to a list:
- In Mail, create a new email
- Click the "Address" button on the top
- A pop up appears that shows both the groups and the individuals. You can either select and individual or a group. Click on "To" or "CC" on the top to add them to the email recipients. I don't know how to add them to BCC which is the polite way to send mass email. But you can always select all from the CC field and cut and paste into BCC if needed.

I know there's more this program is capable of, but that's what I know how to do.

This is a discussion that started on email. I am moving it to here for general review and to give the inboxes a break. Below are the comments to date:

Yeah we talked about that too
The tool is a “die” to cut male threads. Though I think threads on a spoke are technically “rolled” and not cut. I defer to Harv on terminology and technology

We voted against buying one of these tools out of concern it would get broken, lost parts, etc. rapidly in the shop environment. But so far we’ve done pretty well with the frame prep tools we did buy. I don’t think we’ve lost or broken anything yet have we? (chain tools and crank pullers are, of course, another story!)

Dave

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like it.

Its also possible to measure, cut, and tap (tap is for female threads, what's the word for male?), spokes, right? Do we have the equipment to do this? Might be a more of a pain in the butt, but generic solution to the off size problem...

-Matt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s pretty easy and cheap to build something like this out of PVC pipe. Basically cut a bunch of lengths of pipe about spoke size and glue them together in a box shape. Put a little base on it so they tip back slightly and to give you a flat bottom.

We discussed this and actually buying some decent replacement spokes in the past but never proceeded. These kind of storage containers inevitably get messed up as people are never very careful about putting spokes back in the right slot. But it would be nice to sort the spokes we have at least. If we knew what lengths we have and don’t have we could keep an eye out for junk wheels where the spokes should be saved and not just cut. Or maybe make some isolated purchases to fill in gaps for common sizes. I’ve had a couple people recently not able to find an exact match in our “collection” and had to use an off size to repair a wheel.

I’m up for building a simple storage unit if people think it would be useful – or can send a rough sketch of my idea to someone else if they’re feeling like building something.

Dave

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really like this 'spoke motel' they have here for different lenght spokes. Seems like a pretty good system to organize (and not have them get messed up the next time someone needs one). Though I'm not sure where we'd get a cabinet like that or where would be a good place to put it....

http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Despoking_Wheels

- Matt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
found this site that has a few shop manuals, volunteer guides, even remodel plans from a few other bike collectives around the country. A few new ideas ,but pat yourselves on the back seems like we've figured out lot of thing on our own but think we can pick up some ideas here. I'll post on the forum and print some of the stuff out at the Oven when I get a chance - hopefully before the next meeting.

J Harv

http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

During our last meeting, we discussed working up a brief document that could hang in the shop to give guidance and reduce disputes about how things should be run. Attached is a very rough draft to begin the discussion. Ideally this would be reduced down to 1-2 pages of simple statements. But I wanted to start off with some detail to think through the issues (and because I love the sound of my own voice....)

We've had a couple issues come up recently where decisions were made and then recriminations began. I believe we have to accept that our structure means individuals will be making decisions occassionaly that we won't all agree with. But I think if we agree to a set of principles that give guidance on how to make choices, we should be able to keep the shop running the way we'd like without having to have a huge discussion for each minor issue.

discuss...

As part of the Sidewalk sale clearance next Saturday 2/21,as time and supplies permit, we were thinking of some additional remodels that could help. For your consideration:

1) workbench along the wall between the doorway to the back room and the stairway - approx 54 inches wide 22 inches deep, 35 inches tall - accomodates 8 milk crates below and a shelf for a few heavier toos/items. Slat board already installed.
Parts/supplies needed :
a) 2 pieces 3/4 inch plywood interior grade 22x54 minimum or two sold core doors 24x78 minimum to be cut down or
10 feet ( 2x5feet) 2x12 solid boards
b) (30) 2 1/2-3 inch lag screws and or 3 1/2-4 inch carriage bolts nuts and washers.
All other parts ( 2x4's are already in stock.
The hope is folks can look around/find donations, also Jared should have access(if he don't already) to this forum and could someone forward his e-mail as the I believe his Art exhibit source should be available soon.....
Cost if we have to buy new: interior grade plywood - one sheet and lags screw/bolts approx $50 total.

2) More Shelving up stairs - as the Sidewalk sale stuff gets cleared out - there should be room upstairs at the top of the stairs for more shelving to be build from existing 2x4 and more 3/4 plywood:
Parts needed:

a) Construction grade plywood 3/4 inch 4 pieces 22x80 minimum
b) 2lbs decking screws 3 inch
again looking for donations
Costs estimate if buy new: construction grade plywood 2 4x8 sheets and decking screws approx $50 total

Comments? Any additional ideas? The plan is to start Saturday 2/21. Again the hope is no expenditures required if we get the needed items donated. Even if the needed items are not received by 2/21, we'll probably just proceed with what existing materials we already have as I'm hoping Jared can come up with most of whatever else is needed in March.

It's On kids....

Hector is finally taking all of his shit out & we talked about taking this opportunity to rebuild the shop.

So at last nights meeting we decides to close the shop on the week ends of 27/28 & Jan 3/4 to rebuild the shop, Bigger, Stronger, Faster. In conjunction with the Yard sale we could go through all of the bins & cull the herd. Get rid of all the CRAP.... Clean out the up stairs & make it usable!! I mean really usable... Build a rack for the wheels (maybe out of pipe?) Finally do the tool wall, wheel truing area, move all of the wheels, frames up stairs, get more filing cabinets and build more milk crate storage. Build something tube specific, chemical storage, rag bin etc....

We have decided to make next Monday Night a planning night for the rebuild. Do floor plans, wall plans, tools, parts kitchen the whole shimata-kudusei... wooo hoo!!!

So get your ideal hats on for monday night and make some time for those week ends.... bring any new tools that jolly old Saint Meshugeneh-san may have brought you, anyone know of a portable table saw that we could put our hands on???

Why don't we discuss whether something like this is needed, and if so, what it should say?
I gather this is prompted by the fellow with the Kent.
If they are not happy with the bike, why not give them a refund? I think our primary purpose is for people to be happy with their bikes, not to be sticklers or to be running a business with a mountain of rules.
In the 14 months or so we've been open, we've had, what, two or maybe three situations like this. If this happened all the time, I could see the use of this form and the "no refund" policy, but this doesn't seem to me like an ongoing, pain-in-the-ass problem.
What does everyone else say about this?

Yes, I have an issue with not only sending out a plain message to key holders and volunteers about opening tonite in a TIMELY fashion. I humbly opened up the Bike Oven figuring I would just hang for a 1/2 hour by myself. Noticing that the neon sign had been left "on" since who knows when, I figured I would just go in hang for awhile . To my joy, Devin and Christina we're walking towards the Bike Oven as well.

Cut to the chase:

I was not aware that although a drunken hispanic was interested in buying a bike ( not a single word in english was spoken so that left Devin and Christina out of what exactly was being said )....stating that he would return tomorrow to buy. This is a fair warning to whom is scheduled to open shop tomorrow night!

I stupidly shook a very bloody human hand! I am pissed beyond words to be coherent at this moment. so for any of you who are quick to judge, make statements, voice yer opinions, whatever, They may fall upon deaf ears until I settle down.

THIS IS NO FUCKING JOKE! I AM REALLY UPSET AT MYSELF FOR NOT LOOKING AND BEING TO TRUSTING!

Needless to say, Devin and Christina are not happy about any of all what just happened!

What I am trying to say is, I wished I had followed through on not going in tonite and rather gave notice via e-mail/forum at 7:02pm when we open at 7:00pm.

I AM PISSED. Consider someone else for these beloved keys. Now I am feeling sad. Although I don't care for my cameo status. I am truly torn and emotionally unstable right now!

BTW, you'll find an envelop with an extra 5 dollars for an inner tube sale.

What is our policy on Tagged/ not tagged bikes? I thought we had a policy:

NO TAG NOT FOR SALE

Apparently not.

The names and dates are eliminated to protect the guilty . The issue I'm raising here is to propose/clarify some policies for the future.

Recently we had a complete road bike come in one day at the end of a shift just as we were closing and no one had a chance to tag it. Before the end of the very next shift (different volunteers) the bike was completely stripped and several volunteers helped themselves to free parts ( at least no work orders for any of the parts was included in the paper work, no money collect according to the end of shift tally) The only parts left at the Oven was the frame/fork which another volunteer put on hold (with no deposit or time frame indicated) .

This was a complete road bike with better quality parts ,95% ready to ride ( the donor rode it in) just need a seat, bar tape and the brake cable re installed -about 1/2 hour work and an easy $220 at least, on Craigslist.

Instead, As of now the Oven has $.00 and a stripped frame on hold for ?? how long.

Also what if this was someones bike? I guess we would really have to make sure our " not responsible for items left behind "- is actually enforceable otherwise we could have been buying someone a new bike.
What policies do we need/need to clarify?......

Please remove me from the Sunday schedule permanently. I will be available to assist Harv on his Wednesday classes and some other Wednesday volunteer only days. Also next time we should do a better job of notifying our own folks when the Oven is closed. Maybe a telephone chain and / or direct e-mails. Several of our own showed up over the long week-end, not knowing that the Oven was closed - Winona, Dingo, and Jessica as far I know and maybe others too.......

As some of you know, I do not advise using the plastic chain cleaner filled with Simple Green and water to clean chains. I advise clients to clean the outside of the chain with a rag and either solvent or WD40. At home I use diesel fuel for the oil content. Note that complete restoration of rusted and stiff chains falls outside the scope of this procedure.

My reasons for this are identical to the official SRAM Product Management policy below:

"Re: Cleaning of chains. The reason why we do not suggest leaving chains in a solvent tank is because it takes out all the lube between the pin and the inner plates. If we could make sure that people would then use a liquefied grease, then let it cool, we might suggest that people clean chains in a solvent tank. This is how we do it at our factory. We recommend that the user use cleaners that only attack the outer surfaces of the chain to take away the dirt and grime then re-lube. I personally have only used a rag to clean my chains for years and stay away from solvent tanks and jet washers. It's cheaper to replace a 10-15 dollar chain than it is to replace a Ti cog set and an XTR chainring set!

I hope that this helps you better understand chains and SRAM chains in particular. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Best Regards,

Mark Pippin SRAM Product Management"
.

A suggestion for packing our bikes in tighter: rotate the handlebars 90 degrees. I am going to start doing this next time I am at the shop. All you need for most of them is a 6 mm wrench and maybe a hammer to loosen the stem. Don't loosen the stem bolt to where the wedge drops out, two turns should be enough. After bar is rotated, tighten stem bolt so that bike can be steered for handling.

http://tinyurl.com/6585sn

Above is an example of what Community Bicycle Network is doing for classes. Note that they charge $30 for a three hour class, they don't cover near what we do in each class, their "intermediate" classes are much less advanced than our typical class, so ours must be "advanced" as well as more comprehensive. Should we be more basic in our classes and cover less in each session?

For instance, they cover only adjustment and pad replacement in their class on brakes, only briefly mentioning disk brakes. I intend to cover complete disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, reassembly and adjustment of both rim and disk brakes, and probably in one class. Is this way too advanced?

Dave suggested one class in cable adjustment only. Brakes and shifters. Yes, I think this is a good step in the right direction. Then I could do the above class on brakes only. It would not hurt to review brake adjustment again here.

And we should think about asking for at least a $10 donation.

I picked up 20 700x25 presta valve tubes today at Price Point so we are back in stock. These are the average stem length so will NOT work on deep "V" rims.(about 35mm vs 50+ needed for deep "V"'s Price Point as of now is cheaper than Achieva on these tubes $2.16 each.

All tube still sell for $5. Some are pre-priced at different prices. Regardless, they are all still to be sold for $5 for any new tube.

The glass case was getting kind of full and the new arrangement seemed comfusing to me. Anyway there are now a bunch of 26,27 and 700 tubes on one of the shelves by the printer. I left the glass case alone. These are generally the most common sizes and there now at least 20 of each on the shelf behind the printer

Looks like Harv has taken someone's suggestion to take a two month vacation seriously. so as of Now, I am the only one scheduled for Sundays. The past two Sundays only one other volunteer came in on Sunday and the two of us managed to get by. I believe the 'rule or guideline or what ever' that there should be at least two volunteers available before we open is good for both safety and sanity.

I will not be available to open this Sunday 10/19 and any Sunday for the next several weeks so unless anyone else is available to open and close, the Oven will be closed Sundays.

Please make the changes to the schedule. Also Harv should be taken off the Sunday schedule ( actually the entire schedule)for the next two months unless you have heard any different from him.

Tonight I was talking with new volunteer Syd. He concurred that we need to be a bit more organized to help keep new volunteers. I think that the new members who have stayed on have been the ones who came to us with extensive bike knowledge, like Dave and Martin. The ones who came here looking to learn from scratch have drifted away, probably because they couldn't just jump in and we didn't really help them learn in an organized manner.

Why don't we try classes where we set a topic, have volunteers sign up for a stand, and then that will be what we do that Monday or Wednesday.
Syd and I came up with a bunch of topics, I'll post that next.
