    Martin at the Bike Oven

The Bike Oven's initial reaction to news that we are going to be recognized for helping the environment, "We're getting an award for what? Better recycle this can."

Our local councilman, Ed Reyes (1st District), is going to give the Bike Oven a bit of special recognition this coming Friday, April 18, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at an Environmental Awards Breakfast in the Tom Bradley Tower downtown.

If you're interested in being there on the Bike Oven's behalf, shoot me an email at ubrayj02 @ yahoo.com

If anyone has any idea about what sort of background information we should offer up, post it here, or email it to me. I'll work on something to submit on Wednesday, April 15, 2008 - but I can use all the help I can get on this one! The big question: should we mention how cheap wine and Mexican cookies helped fuel the Bike Oven in its early days?

If inspiration strikes here is what the staff putting the award ceremony together need:
"... background information on the history of Bike Oven, when it was established, your service to the community, and any other pertinent or interesting info on Bike Oven, etc.?"
  • Let's send Dingo, Nelson and Kalie.
  • I'll have a ride posted on Ridazz - the butt crack of dawn ride to get some free breakfast in City Hall ride.
  • Who's all planning on going?
  • Anyone who wants to come - please let me know. I need to let the city hall staff know.

I told them to expect three or four of us. So that is me +3 people. If anyone want in, lemme know.
  • Is anyone dressing nicely, or are we looking 'as usual'...and what time again are we meeting at the Bike Oven...8am?
  • Hey how about posting up our fancy smacy award and recap of the event.....now the important stuff....what was the breakfast...........
  • Here's the press release from Ed Reyes' office...Josef, you are now officially known as Josef Ubray:

    REYES HONORS BIKE OVEN WITH
    ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD

Councilmember Ed P. Reyes has awarded Bike Oven the Earth Day 2008 Environmental
Award for its outstanding commitment to increasing environmental awareness in the City
    of Los Angeles.

“In a city like Los Angeles where the car is the most prevalent form of transportation,
The Bike Oven is focused on promoting the use of bicycling as an environmentally
friendly alternative," said Councilmember Ed P. Reyes. “The Bike Oven is a volunteer
run bicycle repair collective which started in a single car garage in Highland Park and
grew to an improved and larger facility. With the combustion of fossil fuels as the leading
cause of climate change, the Bike Oven’s encouragement of a sustainable form of
transportation like bicycling is a welcomed and much-needed resource."

The Bike Oven was one of 15 honorees, each representing a Council District, recognized
for their contributions to working to sustain a good quality of life now and for future
    generations through their environmental efforts.
“The whole idea was to offer up a place to share ideas and knowledge, and to socialize
around and about bicycling,” said Josef Ubray, who founded The Bike Oven in 2005. “I
backed my car out of the garage on Wednesday nights, assembled a meager set of tools
on some old shelves, and offered free pan dulce and boxed wine from Target for the first
    few months.”

The Bike Oven received Reyes’ award at the Earth Day ceremony today in the Tom
Bradley Tower at City Hall, followed d by a formal presentation in the City Council
    Chambers.
The Bike Oven is located at 3706 N. Figueroa in the Los Angeles community of
Highland Park. For more information visit, www.bikeoven.com, or call 323-223-8020.
