Blackrock Bike Oven
  • As per our last meeting, Dave and Crespin have been authorized to borrow two of our movable bike stands (currently unused and sitting upstairs).

What sorts of recommended tool list should they have to set up a Bike Oven-type operation in the desert?

    A starter list:
    • bike stands x2
    • floor pump(s)
    • metric wrench set from 8mm to 19mm+
    • large adjustable wrench (36mm+ reach)
    • set of flathead and phillips screw drivers
    • 1/4" socket set with sizes from 8mm to 19mm+
    • plastic tyre irons
    • patch kits (patch, cement, sandpaper)
    • 26"x1.5"-1.9" inner tubes x5
    • bicycle cable cutters
    • brake and derailleur cables x10 to x20 each
    • claw hammer
    • wood block
    • pedal wrench

    Anything else to add?
  • Hex wrenches, pedal/axle/crank bolt wrench (like our green wrenches).
1/4 drive socket sets usually only go to 13 mm. 14/15 mm required for axle, crank, and pedals.

Nipple wrenches. Wheels are going to get tacoed. Mallot to pound bent wheels straight. Diagonal cutters to remove broken spokes.

Headset pliers, i.e. the Lifu item. Cheapest and best way to go.

Some old chains and a chain tool. Chain lube.
  • Hey you knuckleheads, let's get the important shit first! what about the freakin body paint and a mondo bag of smoke!
  • I think our crack team of Burning Man Ridazz will have the body paint and smoky smoky down already, Steve!

    Harv - I'll suggest a 1/2" socket set instead of the 1/4".

The rest is added to the list!

    Any more ideas?
  • 1/2 inch sockets are over kill : 3/8 sets are cheap enough and usually go up to 19mm. Other than cone wrenches, chain tools and supplies a $100 at Harbor Freight should more than do the job for 2 full stations.
  • I sent this list on to the Blackrock Ridazz crew. Thanks for the help! I think it's a pretty good list of stuff for ust about any mobile bike station, no?

Those Lifu pliers are a great addition, but nobody carries those in stores do they?
  • Lifu pliers, not carried in stores that I know of. I will be ordering several from BikeToolsEtc as soon as we can get together on the spoke tool decision.
  • Time to revisit this concept in view of what recently occurred with our support of the L.A. River ride. Many tools were taken from the shop for this event, resulting in a hardship at the shop for a period of four days. Tools were taken from the workstands, some tools sizes were completely depleted.

We need to assemble a dedicated tool kit for such events. Most basic tool items can be the cheaper Harbor Freight items as listed above. Some bicycle-specific tools need be in the kit. In addition to these items as indicated above, I suggest a set of cone wrenches, as wheel bearings may need to be adjusted in the field. Also, a pair of offset brake wrenches (now re-introduced into the Park catalog) for field brake adjustments.

These hand tools should be stored in a metal tool box (which we already have) and used ONLY for support of this type of event. NO tools must be taken from the shop work stands or main tool board. This tool box must be stored out of sight at the shop so items won't be borrowed, damaged, stolen, or otherwise dissappear.

And absolutely NO borrowing of this tool collection by individuals for their own use.
    .
