Let's buy Josef's spare cotter extractor ($50). The home-made one we have now does not work in every case. We are getting clients bringing in cottered crank bikes frequently now that every cob-webbed and rusty Peugeot is emerging from its garage or shed where it has languished for decades.
And let's not be pounding out the cotters with a hammer and punch. This can dent (or "Brinnel") the cups. Maybe OK for a bike you will never see again, but not good for the bike owner who may get a shorter life out of the crank spindle bearings.
Note that we have an assortment of new replacement cotters now. In a plastic box near the clock corner.
