Anyone heard of or have any opinions about using teflon tape instead of grease for threaded parts like BB and pedals? Also about using anti-seize compound instead of grease since that is really what you are trying to achieve in this case and not "lubrication". Not so much an issue for the shop but for personal interest in "doing it right".
If plumbing is any comparison the antiseize/'pipe dope' puts a finer film everywhere (get into smaller threads)where as the teflon tape as thin as it is is a layer on top of the threads and you can actually wrap to much of it (builds up) but used properly its easier and cleaner to use but you do have to remember to wrap it on the correct way or it will unwind - so either way has its +/-.....
Teflon tape takes up clearances in pipe fittings which are tapered. There is not enough clearance in BB and pedal threads to accomodate teflon tape. Anti-seize would be good for bike applications, but what we have in the shop is whitle lithium grease so that is what I recommend in the shop. At home, I use Dow Corning 5 Silicon Grease (not silicon seal, which is a silicon rubber). Silicon grease stays greasy forever, is not water or oil soluble, and is heat resistant. But it is more expensive than white lithium. You can get other types of silicon grease that is sold for plumbing applications (mainly faucet threads and stems) or spark plug boot grease, available in auto supply stores.
