Please send in a letter to Ed Reyes office and LA DOT about how great and safe the streets are because of these new sharrows. We’ll have a letter writting campaign at 5pm until the movie with some pho. Talk about how to get the bike infrastructure one section of town at a time through community councils because bike the talk bike the walk is back because bikeside salons are inspirational, Im not going to give up what we’ve been doing and neither should you, come down and lets make it happen with some grub and joseph. so if you cant make it and want us to send your letters email them to me at blackwomansidekick@hotmail.com and we’ll do the job.

Okay there is a lot going on but it will all happen in one night.

First if your driving you should leave your car at the Bike Oven, which is the end of the ride, and ride up in a caravan with us at 6:30pm to the flagpole.

2nd The ride begins at the flagpole, York and Figueroa, at 7pm. Bring lights and blinkies and friends and get ready to explore the NELA art galleries as they are all open just for us.

3rd we come back to the Oven and Pigeon at approximately 10pm  for the opening of Simon’s show “Sleep is for the weak” at the Oven and Bikable LA at the Pigeon. Bikable LA is wide open, bring stuff you are working on related to making this city bikable because we have a long way to go and we need to get really creative at this point, but lets do it–we have nothing better to wish for for the holidays.

Kiddie bike races, burning pinatas, homebrew and some sort of nomnom truck of some sort. The Flying Pigeon is hosting a few sprint races, we’re going to close off the parking on the street for this to happen and he’s got prizes.

It’s cold but the Oven is warm.  See ya there

LA City Council Meeting - All Bikes - Wed. 12/9

Los Angeles City Councilmember Bill Rosendahl will chair a meeting of the council’s Transportation Committee that will focus exclusively on bicycling issues on Wednesday, December 9, 2 pm – 5 pm.

Subjects on the agenda are:

  • An update from the Planning Department and DOT on outreach efforts for the Draft Bicycle Master Plan
  • Report from LAPD on bicycle incidents and conflicts between bicyclists and motorists
  • The Sharrows pilot program
  • A bicycle sharing program for the City of Los Angeles
  • Bicyclist anti-harassment ordinance
  • Revising the Zoning Code that would improve bicycle parking requirements for new development

LAPD issues promise to be especially heated given the recent incident at Critical Mass. It is unlikely that anything related to that incident will be resolved at this meeting, but it is important for the cycling community to continue pressure on the LAPD to rethink the way they interact with the cycling community and live up to the promises they have made to improve.

Even if you don’t have anything to say, attending these meetings lets the City Council, LAPD, and city departments know that these issues are important to a broad group of LA citizens.

The meeting is here:
Wednesday, December 9, 2009 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Los Angeles City Hall
200 N. Spring Street, Room 1010
Los Angeles , CA 90012

The offical agenda is here.

And there’s some commentary here.

Bicycle Street Racks

This message came to us from Rick Marquez, 90042 bike enthusiast:

Hello 90042 bike enthusiast,

On Thursday, Dec. 3rd, the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council will be deciding, whether or not, to support green transportation. The HHPNC Land Use Committee has proposed, to CD1 and CD14, bicycle street racks on both York Blvd. and Figueroa (see attached).

*Motion: If needed, $2000 for bike street racks at Ave. 50 and York Blvd. (CD 14 is still working on approval from L.A. Department of Transportation.) (David Baird)

Please pass this message on and join other bike enthusiast at this meeting. Lets show support for alternative green transportation in Highland Park.

Fight for Cycling’s Share of Measure R Funds

Measure R raised the local sales tax rate to pay for transportation improvements. Cycling and pedestrain projects should get some share of this money, but the amount is still under debate. Please come out to Wednesday’s Transportation Committee meeting at 2pm to continue to support 10% for bikes and peds so that it becomes officially approved. A strong showing at the meeting will make a big difference in getting 10% for bikes and peds!

10% for bikes and peds will directly affect the funding available for bike projects.

When: Wednesday, November 18, 2pm
Where: City Hall, 200 North Spring Street, Los Angeles, Ca 90012. Room 1010

Announcement via Aurisha Smolarski of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.

SoapBoxLA also has some information on the weird math being used to calculate that 10% number.

Urban Bike Project Survey

Please take the following survey to assist collecting the “experience and knowledge of cyclists in the City of Los Angeles.”

The survey will also support a “white paper” that will be released in February on behalf of the Los Angeles Sustainability Collaborative (www.lasustainability.org).
